Unlike most of our farmers, Shane has not been in the business for all of his life. In fact, he has only been in the business now for about 8 years. Before this, he was an intensive care paramedic for the ambulance service. So we had to ask how he got into oyster farming, and he said it was actually from a mate he played golf with. He had noticed that his mate played golf often, giggled a lot, and drank plenty of beer. He thought to himself that he wanted to do what he did. He bought his mate’s farm and has loved oyster farming since.
He enjoys being in the water and in touch with his surroundings. He also likes that oyster farming is heading toward a more environmental friendly way of growing the oysters by replacing the old infrastructure with greener and cleaner options.
Outside of the oyster farm, he has built a shop front that is now a licensed oyster bar. Basically this guy has no other time aside from growing and selling oysters! He loves it and says it’s a lot of fun!
